Congratulations to the ACT's Environmental Educator of the Year for 2022, Vivienne Pearce OAM

Congratulations to the ACT's Environmental Educator of the Year for 2022, Vivienne Pearce OAM.

Read more about Viv!

In a long career as an educator Viv has been able to promote Education for Sustainability (EfS) as a science teacher, an education ranger at the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) and as leader and Board member in many community groups. She believes in inclusive and equitable quality environmental education for all, no matter how young or old, as the key to a better planet.

Vivienne has taught, mentored, provoked discussions, led and advocated for our planet’s fragile environment with countless students, parents, and colleagues through her paid and unpaid work. She has used her OAM for Services to Education to enhance her capacity to speak out and influence others around the importance of a sustainability mindset to our society’s survival. She has promoted sustainability to Federal and Territory politicians, bureaucrats and the wider community through direct discussions, submissions and when an issue is not progressed, with media articles, interviews, and rallies.

Viv has also led difficult discussions to further First Nations Knowledge/Caring for Country issues in her roles as P&C Council’s past President and present Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) convenor, at ANBG in her role as a Ranger, in the AAEE RAP Group and in the Conservation Council (CCACT) Board's First Nations Subcommittee.

Comment from Helen McHugh - Education and Learning Coordinator, Australian National Botanic Gardens, and nominator for the environmental education excellence award:

“As one of our most experienced educators…she takes on mentorship of new staff to develop their skills to engage and inspire students. In her voluntary role as President of ACT AAEE, Vivienne runs highly successful professional networking events which connect teachers and educators from a variety of organisations and backgrounds to be inspired, discover, spark ideas, and develop collaborations.”

Comment from Jenny Dibley - Australian Environmental Educator of the Year 2018 and former Manager of ACTSmart Schools:

“Viv’s commitment to supporting youth and early childhood educators has been demonstrated by her active involvement in: ACT Parliament of Youth on Sustainability, planning committee for the National AAEE Conference, Canberra (she encouraged a youth component and gained sponsorship for two students from each ACT college to attend) and presentations at ACT early childhood forums. She also developed with the AAEEACT Executive, a new ACT Award, Emerging Environmental Educator to mentor younger educators. Well done, Viv!"
