Host a screening of 'The Story of Plastic' - brought to you by Story of Stuff
July 2020
From the ACT Chapter PresidentTo all those hardworking colleagues in the ACT who think Environmental Education is important (very important as the Climate Emergency becomes reality), well done you have made it to the end of the term! This has been a crazy exhausting year, some say it feels like an alternate reality ...
At a Glance - Events Coming UpPlastic Free July; Host a screening of 'The Story of Plastic'; ACT Future Film Festival Competition; Trash Gather Educational Program - in-school workshops; 4th August ACT Green Ed Drinks - Online with the National Portrait Gallery
In the area of education, we have had to model new ways to make education available to our students and the community in general. How we use online technology to increase a mindset of sustainability and a connection with nature can be tricky when students are spending hours in front of a screen! However, many families have used the time to get out and connect with their local environment. As schools have returned, we can hope that these activities will continue in some form. Many people have commented to me that walking or cycling in their local reserves and green spaces has been an essential part of maintaining mental wellbeing for themselves and their family.
Some have thrived under on-line learning regimes, some have not, most have coped but missed the social connections that come with face to face contact. As educators, it should come as no surprise that everyone is an individual and has individual needs. Some have really struggled with the transition back to school and workplaces, others now realise the value of their friends, teachers and the school setting or workplace. The phrase “we are all in this together” has taken on a new meaning and hopefully, the sentiment will carry over into the area of environmental sustainability.

Excellence Thrives in the ACT
On a positive note, to highlight the excellent work done in the ACT in Environmental Education, we have this year expanded the 2020 ACT Environmental Education Excellence Awards. As well as the Open and Emerging within Schools categories, we now are able to showcase environmental education programs and practice 'Emerging within the Community'.
So, this is your chance to nominate yourself or a colleague doing excellent work in environmental education here in the ACT! Awardees will be granted a full 20/21 membership of AAEE, and the nomination that best meets the selection criteria will be selected by a panel to represent the ACT in the national award, Australian Environmental Educator of the Year.
I am looking forward to seeing this year’s nominations! Send your nominations in writing to aaeeact@gmail.com by August 3rd at the very latest, or send an expression of interest ASAP. Criteria and more information here.
Thank you - your membership drives the connections which make many things possible
A very big thank you must go to all local members for your continued support of your professional association by renewing and even upgrading your AAEE memberships.

A very big thank you must go to all local members for your continued support of your professional association by renewing and even upgrading your AAEE memberships.
We have such a supportive network here in the ACT that it is really easy to forget the fact that in many locations in Australia the AAEE network is the only thing supporting educators as they try to put in place innovative impactful environmental education practice - and often succeed!
It really is down to your support through membership that AAEE nationally can support its legion of volunteers and mentors, fund new works and small grants (such as this new book 'There's No Such Place As Away' from FoodWeb Education), and ensure the annual awards happen across each state and territory, to encourage and recognise both accomplished and emerging environmental educators.
We know that tough economic times mean there are more calls on more limited resources as we all reach out and help those around us. If your membership is lapsed or is soon to lapse, and you are worried about affording renewals but would still like to pledge support to stay connected, please let our friendly Treasurer know at aaeeact@gmail.com, or email Natasha Cameron and Jen Pearson at admin@aaee.org.au
