Pond Dipping - Habitats and Lifecycles


Investigate the teaming life in a freshwater pond. Who feeds on who? Analyse your catch macroscopically and then see every hair and claw with our microscopes. Classify and categorise your findings into a simple food web.

Unlock the Garden gates and shine a spotlight into a whole new world. Experience the sounds, smells and textures of the Gardens in the dark as you explore the rainforest to the red centre. Uncover the stories of our native plants, spy for nocturnal wildlife then share your discoveries over a hot Milo and biscuits (optional extra).Great evening activity for local and interstate schools, scouts, guides and youth groups.

  • Plant identification - Classification, major Australian families, herbarium specimens, microscope dissections and using keys
  • Plant Structures - discover the strategies plant use to grow and survive through investigating under the microscope seeds, leaves, stems and flowers.
  • Horticulture - from pre-treatment of seed, to sowing, aftercare, transplanting and cuttings, learn how our Horticulturalists manage the Gardens
  • Photosynthesis - learn the ins and outs of plant respiration and why we need them to survive
