ACT Parliament of Youth on Sustainability

Link to the ACT Parliament of Youth on Sustainability. The ACT Parliament of Youth on Sustainability is an annual all-schools program that culminates in a one day mock-Parliament event at the Australian National University. It is aimed at giving young people a voice when it comes to the environment. The theme of the 2020 ACT Parliament of Youth on Sustainability is: 'What's one way we can thrive in the 21st Century?'

√ College
√ Tertiary Students (as mentors)
√ Educator PD (TQI Accredited)

Teachers support students to research and develop a proposal. The process involves teams of school students - from kindergarten to Year 12 - researching and developing proposals we can adopt to make Canberra a sustainable city, and then presenting the proposals to other students from across the ACT ... as well ACT Members of the Legislative Assembly attending the Parliament.

Program features

Each Youth Parliament team:

  • Studies one aspect of sustainability, addressing opportunities for how Canberra can thrive environmentally in the 21st Century

  • Develops a proposal for action to help Canberra thrive in creative and innovative ways

  • Outlines what they’ve learnt and pitches their single proposal for action in a one-page Green Paper, due early May 2020

  • Prepares a 5 minute presentation based on their Green Paper

  • Chooses one student to act as their 'Minister' if their proposal is voted as one of the best at the Parliament. Student Ministers prepare a one minute summary speech outlining and selling their proposal in readiness to present this at the Parliament.
